The real difference is product philosophy

Perplexity and ChatGPT overlap much more than they used to. Both can search the web, perform deeper research, analyze files and run increasingly agentic workflows. Treating them as two interchangeable chatbots is therefore misleading.

Perplexity still begins from a search-and-evidence philosophy. The interface is designed around retrieving current information, synthesizing it and exposing sources. Its paid plans then add an unusually broad model selector: current documentation lists GPT-5.6 Terra, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Claude Sonnet 5, Grok 4.5 and other models on Pro, with GPT-5.6 Sol and Claude Opus 5 among the Max additions.

ChatGPT begins from a general-purpose workspace philosophy. Its advantage is not access to many model vendors; it is the integration of OpenAI's own model family with Search, Deep Research, files, data analysis, image work, voice, Work and Codex. That makes ChatGPT easier to justify as a single default AI product for a user whose tasks vary throughout the day.

Research and citations: Perplexity has the cleaner fit

If the central question is “where did this answer come from?”, Perplexity is the more natural starting point. Search is designed around live retrieval and citations, and its Deep Research mode expands the number of sources and the depth of analysis. The result is not automatically true simply because it contains links, but the product makes verification part of the normal workflow rather than an optional extra step.

ChatGPT can also perform web search and Deep Research, and its current GPT-5.6 product layer is strong enough that research is a major use case rather than a side feature. The difference is emphasis: ChatGPT is optimized to continue from research into analysis, writing, code, files and finished artifacts. Perplexity is optimized to make the research layer itself central.

That is why AiToolMap does not translate this comparison into “Perplexity is more accurate.” The current evidence does not support a universal factual-accuracy claim across every mode and model. The narrower conclusion is stronger: Perplexity is more verification-oriented by design.

Models: Perplexity sells choice; ChatGPT sells the OpenAI stack

Perplexity's model selector is a genuine differentiator. A Pro subscriber can use multiple current frontier model families inside Perplexity's own search and citation layer, while Max adds higher-end options. That can replace several separate subscriptions for users whose main need is comparing model behavior on research-oriented tasks.

There is an important limitation: using an OpenAI or Anthropic model inside Perplexity is not the same as using the provider's native application. Perplexity adds its own retrieval, prompts, citations, tools, safety controls and usage limits. A benchmark score for GPT-5.6 Sol therefore cannot simply be assigned to “Perplexity” as a product score.

ChatGPT takes the opposite approach. Free and Go users currently default to GPT-5.6 Luna, while Plus adds GPT-5.6 Sol at eligible reasoning levels and Pro expands the high-compute options. The benefit is product coherence; the cost is that users who specifically want Claude, Gemini or Grok must use those products elsewhere.

Creation, coding and finished work: ChatGPT is broader

ChatGPT's strongest advantage appears after the research phase. The same account can move from a question into uploaded files, structured data, writing, images, voice and dedicated coding workflows. Codex gives developer work its own surface, while ChatGPT Work is explicitly aimed at longer-running tasks that can use connected applications and produce documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports and other artifacts.

Perplexity has moved aggressively in the same direction. Computer can execute multi-step tasks, work across connectors, create documents and code, and its Personal Computer and Comet surfaces extend agentic behavior into local applications and the browser. This means “Perplexity is only search” is now outdated.

The difference is still meaningful: Perplexity's expansion starts from research and orchestration, while ChatGPT's expansion starts from a broader creation/workspace product. For a user who spends more time producing than discovering, ChatGPT is usually the cleaner default.

Pricing: the $20 headline hides very different economics

The easiest comparison is the mainstream paid tier: Perplexity Pro is $20/month or $200/year, while ChatGPT Plus is $20/month. ChatGPT also has a lower Go tier at a $8/month U.S. reference price. At the premium end, Perplexity Max is $200/month, while ChatGPT currently offers Pro usage levels at $100 and $200 per month.

Perplexity becomes more complicated when Computer enters the picture. Current documentation defines 100 Computer credits as $1. Consumer Pro has no recurring monthly Computer allocation after its introductory bonus; Max includes 10,000 credits per month. Complex agent jobs can therefore create usage-sensitive spend on top of the subscription.

ChatGPT's high-compute Work and Codex usage is also not accurately described as “unlimited.” OpenAI now uses plan-specific limits and flexible credit structures for eligible workloads. The practical rule is to compare the exact workflow you intend to run, not only the subscription badge.

Privacy and agentic risk: do not treat permissions as a footnote

Both products now have modes that can do more than generate text. Once an AI can access connected services, browse autonomously, modify files or continue scheduled work, the security question changes from “can it hallucinate?” to “what can a wrong action affect?” That is a materially different risk surface.

On consumer data controls, Perplexity says AI Data Retention is enabled by default for Free, Pro and Max users, with an account-level opt-out for model training; its Enterprise data is treated differently and is not used for training. OpenAI likewise provides ChatGPT Data Controls that allow users to choose whether conversations can be used to improve models.

AiToolMap does not declare a universal privacy winner here. Enterprise retention terms, connected applications, regional processing and administrator settings can change the answer. For sensitive work, evaluate the exact plan and permission model rather than extrapolating from the consumer chat interface.

Which should you choose?

Choose Perplexity if:

  • you spend a large share of your time researching current information;
  • you want citations and source visibility to be the default workflow;
  • you value access to several frontier model providers through one research product;
  • you want Deep Research and agentic execution to grow out of a search-first interface.

Choose ChatGPT if:

  • you want one primary assistant for many different types of work;
  • you move frequently from research into writing, files, data, images, voice or presentations;
  • coding matters enough that a dedicated Codex workflow is useful;
  • you prefer a coherent OpenAI stack over choosing among several model vendors.
Most useful short answer

Perplexity is the specialist that has become broader. ChatGPT is the generalist that has become deeper. Pick Perplexity when evidence retrieval is the center of the job; pick ChatGPT when the job continues well beyond retrieval.
