Product & capabilities

What Claude Design is now

Claude Design is a distinct Anthropic beta product for creating and iterating on visual work through conversation. It is not merely Claude chat with a design prompt. The current product combines a chat interface with a visual canvas and is aimed at designs, interactive prototypes, presentations, microsites and related visual work. It can start from prompts, screenshots, codebases and design assets, inherit an organization’s design system, accept direct edits and inline comments, and move work into Claude Code or external creative/deployment tools.123

Anthropic launched Claude Design on April 17, 2026 as an Anthropic Labs research preview. The launch build was described as powered by Claude Opus 4.7. That statement is now historical rather than a safe description of the current runtime: Anthropic’s current help material confirms that Opus 5 can be used in Claude Design and that Claude’s automatic model-switching behavior applies in Design. AiToolMap therefore reviews Claude Design as an application surface and does not attach a fixed foundation-model benchmark score to it.45

This is a desk review. AiToolMap did not create a design, upload a codebase, measure token use or export a prototype itself. Under Review Methodology v1.8, all 50 fixed panel sources were audited individually. Relevant material was opened and read where available; no-result and inaccessible outcomes were logged explicitly. Multiple independent reviewers did perform hands-on tests, and those tests are used with their dates and product-version limitations preserved.

The June overhaul matters more than the launch demo

Claude Design changed substantially only two months after launch. Anthropic rebuilt design-system import so users can bring one or several systems from GitHub, design files, raw uploads or local code. Claude is supposed to build from those components, check its work against the system and correct mismatches before surfacing the result. Larger organizations can use an admin role to approve and lock a standard design system.36

The code handoff also became more ambitious. `/design-sync` can bring existing components from Claude Code into Design; work can then move back into Claude Code without restarting from screenshots. Users can also connect the Claude Design MCP server and create/edit projects from a terminal workflow.2 This is strategically important because early reviewers repeatedly identified the design-to-code handoff as the boundary where the product became less convincing.

Builder.io’s April hands-on review found Claude Design unusually good for exploration: relevant clarifying questions, multiple directions, custom sliders and visual annotation made it feel more like a creative workspace than a chat box. But that launch-era review also found limited direct editing, buggy tweak controls and weak continuity with the live production application; its estimated design-system fidelity was roughly 50–75% in the tested workflow.10 Builder is a competitor, so those findings must be read with that conflict in mind, and several limitations predate Anthropic’s June rebuild. They are useful as a list of failure modes that the newer product specifically claims to address, not as proof that the same defects remain unchanged.

Brian Perry’s independent practitioner account is similarly dated but informative. He found the design output strong enough that he actually implemented one of the concepts, putting Claude Design ahead of other AI design tools he had tried. At the same time he encountered unprompted changes, awkward navigation, heavy token consumption and a Claude Code handoff that needed substantial cleanup.9

Justin McKelvey’s early-June hands-on review also praised the live-HTML output and design-system/code workflow. Because it predates the June 17 overhaul, it is better evidence for the product’s basic design thesis than for the current implementation details.11

The result is a rare review situation where some of the most useful independent criticism is partially stale because the vendor visibly rebuilt the exact components reviewers criticized. AiToolMap keeps those findings, labels them by version and does not pretend Anthropic’s own “fixed” claims are independent verification.

What the current product can do

Anthropic’s current help documentation describes a two-pane workflow: chat on the left, working canvas on the right. A typical project attaches a design system, adds screenshots/codebase or other context, asks Claude to build, then iterates through chat, inline comments and canvas editing before export or sharing.2

Design systems are a central feature rather than an optional brand-color field. Claude can extract reusable components, colors, typography and layout patterns from codebases, presentations, documents, screenshots, prototypes and brand assets. Teams can publish the resulting system so new projects inherit it automatically.6

The June editor adds direct drag, resize and alignment controls. Anthropic also expanded destinations to Adobe, Base44, Canva, Gamma, Lovable, Miro, Replit, Vercel and Wix, alongside PDF and PowerPoint workflows.3 This reinforces the product’s positioning as a starting point and handoff hub rather than a closed destination where every design must be finalized.

For software-product work, the Claude Code relationship is the differentiator. The promise is not merely “generate a mockup from a prompt,” which many tools can now do. It is “generate the visual direction in a designer-friendly surface, preserve the relevant components, then continue toward implementation with the same Claude ecosystem.” Current documentation makes that loop materially more credible than it was at launch.23

Model routing: do not score Claude Design by an Opus leaderboard

At launch, Anthropic explicitly connected Claude Design to Opus 4.7.4 Current Claude has moved beyond that generation. Anthropic’s pricing page now lists newer Opus/Fable/Sonnet models, and a current help article states that automatic model switching for Opus 5 works in Claude Design just as it does in Claude web, Desktop, Code and Cowork.125

That means a static claim such as “Claude Design = Opus 4.7” is outdated. It also means an Opus 5 benchmark should not automatically become a Claude Design benchmark. Application quality depends on more than the underlying model: canvas tooling, visual rendering, design-system extraction, tool orchestration, file handling, iteration state, edit controls and handoff behavior all matter.

The fixed panel’s model benchmark sources therefore receive no direct Claude Design performance score. AiToolMap will only use model-layer evidence in the final site-wide rating system where the current model relationship is verified and the surface-match weight explicitly reflects that it is not an application test.

Pricing & access

Usage limits and pricing

Claude Design is not available on the Free plan. Current pricing includes it in Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.112

The current U.S. reference price for Pro is $20 per month, or $17 per month with the annual $200 subscription. Max starts at $100 per month and offers 5x or 20x Pro usage. Team standard seats are $20 per user per month billed annually ($25 monthly), while Team premium seats are $100 annually billed ($125 monthly). Enterprise uses seat pricing plus usage at API rates in the current self-serve presentation.12

The most important pricing detail is not the sticker price but shared usage. Claude Design now consumes the same pool as chat, Claude Code and Cowork. Complex projects with large codebases or many iterations consume more usage; when included limits are exhausted, Design becomes unavailable until reset unless usage credits are enabled.2

This is a better architecture than the launch-era separate weekly Design allowance because the user is not trapped inside a tiny specialized pool. It does not make Design usage predictable. Generative visual work can require many iterations and significant context, and Anthropic’s claim that average token use fell is not yet backed by a comparable independent post-overhaul quota test in the evidence corpus.3

For someone already paying for Claude Pro or Max, Design’s incremental price is effectively zero. That makes it easy to try. For a buyer considering Claude primarily for Design, the economically relevant question is whether the shared allowance sustains the expected design workload—not merely whether the feature is “included.”

Evidence & trust

Independent output evidence: impressive first drafts, human judgment still required

Tom’s Guide provides the cleanest consumer-style exact-product test in the fixed panel. The reviewer gave Claude Design a deliberately sparse brief for a fictional cold-pizza startup and let the tool fill in missing choices. In 30 minutes it produced a coherent brand direction, logo/packaging concepts, visuals, marketing language and organized files. The reviewer also tested it with an existing brand bible and reported that the supplied brand information carried into the generated assets.7

The same review is clear that polished generation is not the same as finished design. Human designers still add strategy, taste, selection and refinement; some generated ideas fall flat. That distinction is important because Claude Design’s marketing promise is about expanding exploration, not proving that every generated direction is production-ready.7

PCWorld’s test reinforces the first-pass quality signal. A simple interactive explainer prompt produced a polished draft in minutes, with clear copy and functioning interactive elements. The reviewer was impressed by the output despite not being a designer.8 The test’s quota outcome is no longer current, but its quality observation remains relevant to the launch product.

Builder.io’s review gives a more demanding practitioner perspective. It praised the question-driven ideation model, visual annotation and generation of multiple options, but found the product less convincing once exact production fidelity and fine-grained editing mattered.10 That is also the most sensible current dividing line: Claude Design is well evidenced as an exploration accelerator; it is less independently evidenced as a canonical production design environment.

Privacy, training and enterprise controls

Claude Design can ingest unusually sensitive material for a creative tool: codebases, screenshots, brand guidelines, prototypes, documents and persistent design assets. Data handling therefore matters more than it would for a disposable public-image prompt.

Anthropic’s consumer Privacy Policy, effective July 8, 2026, says consumer Inputs and Outputs may be used to train and improve Anthropic models unless the user opts out, subject to safety-review and explicit-feedback exceptions. It also describes collection of uploaded/connected inputs and third-party integrations.13 This should not be confused with business terms.

For Team and Enterprise, Anthropic’s current pricing states that content is not used for model training by default. Enterprise data is governed by commercial agreements rather than the consumer privacy policy.1213

Claude Design’s admin guide says uploaded design assets are stored persistently and follow the same retention/deletion policies as other Anthropic enterprise products. It also explicitly says Claude Design does not currently support data-residency requirements.14 Organizations with mandatory regional residency therefore have a concrete current limitation to evaluate before rollout.

Preview isolation is a stronger point. Anthropic says project previews run in sandboxed iframes on a separate content domain, cannot reach the Claude account, login or editor, and use signed short-lived authorization tokens checked against sharing permissions.14 These are vendor security representations, not an AiToolMap penetration test, but they are specific enough to be decision-relevant.

Enterprise controls include an organization toggle, custom roles and the ability to keep Design off by default until administrators enable it.14 The product also allows an approved design system to be locked for organizational consistency.3

User evidence is still too thin for a meaningful standalone rating

Unlike Claude itself, Claude Design does not yet have a mature exact-product review population on the major software-review platforms in the fixed panel. No exact G2, Capterra, TrustRadius, SoftwareReviews, PeerSpot, Crozdesk or Trustpilot population was identified in this cycle.

Gartner Peer Insights has a broader Anthropic product-family page. One May 29 enterprise review specifically complains that Claude Design consumes many tokens while praising Claude’s overall flexibility, integrations and governance. The page’s 4.6/5 score from 13 ratings belongs to the broader Anthropic surface, so AiToolMap does not use it as a Claude Design numeric rating.15

The Apple App Store’s broader Claude app has a current individual review explicitly titled “Claude Design” giving five stars and saying it is great for creating. But that is one review inside the general Claude app population, and the app-store aggregate itself measures Claude mobile rather than the separate web/Desktop Design surface.16 It is retained as qualitative sentiment only.

Trustpilot has no exact Claude Design population in the audited panel and, under v1.8 methodology, would be qualitative only even if it did.

The absence of a large independent user-review population is not evidence that users dislike the product. It is a confidence constraint: the product is new, beta and embedded inside Claude subscriptions, so conventional review sites have not yet isolated it cleanly.

Who it's for

Who should choose Claude Design

Claude Pro and Max users who already work in Claude Code have the clearest reason to adopt it. The feature is included, the interaction is unusually well suited to early visual exploration, and the June round-trip removes some of the friction between mockup and implementation.

Founders and product managers without deep Figma skills are another strong fit. Independent testing shows that sparse briefs can become coherent, useful visual directions quickly.78

Professional designers should treat it as an exploration and acceleration tool rather than assume it replaces their canonical design environment. Its best value may be generating and narrowing directions, testing on-brand variations and handing viable concepts to the next tool.

Large organizations should evaluate the admin controls, retention model, absence of current data residency, shared usage economics and real design-system fidelity on their own component library before broad enablement.14

Strengths & weaknesses

Strengths

Its strongest use case is visual exploration with enough structure that the result can continue into real work. The canvas, clarifying questions, multiple directions, annotations and direct controls reduce the cognitive burden of encoding every design choice in text.102

The design-system workflow is unusually relevant for organizations. Rather than starting every prompt from generic visual taste, teams can give Claude real brand/product context and publish a shared system. The June rebuild specifically tries to close the gap between approximate style matching and component-level continuity.63

The Claude Code bridge is another structural advantage for teams already in Anthropic’s ecosystem. If the round-trip works as designed, a prototype is less likely to become a dead-end artifact that engineers must recreate from screenshots.2

Finally, inclusion in existing paid Claude plans lowers adoption friction. A Pro subscriber can test a serious design environment without adding another standalone subscription.12

Weaknesses

The first limitation is maturity. Anthropic still labels Claude Design beta and says improvements ship frequently.1 The product has changed enough in four months that a review can become stale quickly.

The second is evidence quality after the June overhaul. The best hands-on tests in the corpus are mostly from April and early June. They establish that the core output can be excellent and identify concrete historical failure modes, but they do not independently verify Anthropic’s current claims of lower token usage, sharper design-system fidelity, fewer errors and smoother code round-trips.

The third is fine-grained professional control. Early expert testing found that direct editing and persistent production continuity lagged mature tools such as Figma.10 Anthropic has since added stronger editor controls and code synchronization, but Design still appears positioned as an AI-native creation/handoff surface rather than a full replacement for every layer-based collaborative workflow.

The fourth is quota predictability. Shared limits are better than the launch quota architecture, but heavy visual iteration can still consume substantial compute and there is no simple fixed “designs per month” guarantee.2

The fifth is data residency: Enterprise customers with strict residency requirements cannot currently rely on Claude Design for that requirement.14
