AfterShip has expanded its ecommerce platform around a new AI product surface called AfterShip Intelligence, with AfterShip Agent handling post-purchase operational work such as shipment exceptions and return reviews.

The company positions Intelligence as the underlying data and model layer for its AI features, while Agent is the action-oriented component that gathers context, recommends resolutions and prepares actions for human approval.

The first workflows target shipment exceptions and return reviews

AfterShip’s product page says Agent can detect shipment problems, pull together order and carrier context and draft a response or recommended fix. For failed deliveries, it can prepare a customer message or coordinate a redelivery workflow; for stalled or lost shipments, it can start an investigation or claim and recommend a policy-compliant resolution.

For returns, AfterShip says the RMA Review Agent evaluates more than 100 risk indicators, explains the evidence behind its assessment and routes high-risk cases for human review. The RMA review capability is currently limited to US merchants.

Human approval remains part of the operating model

The product surface is not presented as an unrestricted autonomous agent. AfterShip’s own examples repeatedly place approval between the agent’s recommendation and a customer-facing or financial action. Independent launch coverage likewise reports that financial and customer-facing decisions still require human approval.

That makes the current product closer to an operational copilot with action preparation and selective automation than a fully autonomous post-purchase operator.

AfterShip is also exposing the stack to external agents

The company says its AI ecosystem includes MCP servers, connectors and open APIs so external agents can act on AfterShip data. Its developer documentation lists post-purchase MCP access alongside APIs, SDKs and webhooks.

The broader Intelligence layer also powers predictive delivery and product recommendations. AfterShip says its models draw on data accumulated across billions of shipments and a large carrier network, although performance figures remain vendor claims unless independently validated.

Independent coverage on September 4 described the launch as a new AI product for post-purchase tracking, returns and shipping, with early merchant deployments for exception handling and return review.

For AiToolMap, the important distinction is product surface: AfterShip Intelligence is the AI/data layer, while AfterShip Agent is the operational agent that works on concrete post-purchase tasks. The product is not currently in the canonical catalog, so this news item is also routed as a candidate for the next new-tool research session rather than silently creating a tool record from news evidence alone.
