ChatGPT, Claude and Grok all suffered service disruptions during overlapping windows on September 3, creating a rare same-day reliability event across three major general-purpose AI assistants.

OpenAI’s status page records elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex beginning during the afternoon and later marked resolved. Anthropic separately reported elevated errors affecting multiple Claude models and surfaces, while xAI logged a models outage across Grok apps and API regions.

The incidents overlapped, but a shared cause is unproven

The Verge documented the near-simultaneous failures and noted that the cause of the overlap was unclear. That distinction is important: three providers being degraded at roughly the same time does not establish a common infrastructure failure, shared dependency or coordinated event.

xAI’s own status page shows its models outage beginning at 13:30 UTC and lasting about three and a half hours across Android and API services. Anthropic’s incident history shows multiple Claude models affected during a broadly overlapping period before recovery. OpenAI likewise reported elevated errors across many ChatGPT and Codex components before mitigation and resolution.

Why the episode matters

For users, the event is less about any single provider’s root cause than about operational concentration. Workflows that depend on one hosted assistant can stop when that provider degrades; the September 3 overlap also shows that simply naming several alternative providers does not guarantee that all will be available at the same moment.
