NVIDIA has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, a deal that would put one of the AI ecosystem’s most important model, dataset and application hubs under the ownership of the dominant AI-chip supplier.
The transaction matters well beyond corporate ownership. Hugging Face is infrastructure for open and open-weight AI: NVIDIA says more than 18 million developers use the platform to share over 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications, while more than 200,000 companies use it to discover, evaluate, customize and deploy AI systems.
NVIDIA is explicitly promising platform neutrality
In its announcement, NVIDIA said Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem. The company says developers will continue to choose their own models, frameworks, clouds, inference providers and compute platforms, and that NVIDIA hardware will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face.
That commitment is central to how the deal will be judged. Hugging Face has grown partly because it sits across competing model vendors, clouds and accelerators. Reuters and AP both highlighted the neutrality question, noting that NVIDIA’s ownership could create concerns about preferential treatment even as the company promises interoperability.
The acquisition expands NVIDIA deeper into the software layer
NVIDIA is already a major supplier of the hardware used to train and run AI models. Buying Hugging Face would give it a much larger role in the software and distribution layer where developers discover models, datasets and applications and decide how to deploy them.
Reuters reported that NVIDIA will pay about $11.9 billion to Hugging Face shareholders and provide up to $1 billion in equity-based retention incentives for employees. The deal is expected to face scrutiny because of NVIDIA’s position in AI accelerators and Hugging Face’s importance to the open-model ecosystem.
What changes for Hugging Face users now
Nothing in the announcement indicates an immediate requirement to migrate workloads or adopt NVIDIA compute. The material near-term change is ownership: if the transaction closes, Hugging Face will become part of NVIDIA while retaining an explicit commitment to remain open and compute-agnostic.
