OpenAI plans to wind down model access inside Cursor after the SpaceX acquisition

OpenAI said on August 28, 2026 that it intends to wind down the contract through which Cursor receives OpenAI models following Cursor’s acquisition by SpaceX. The proposed shutoff date is November 12, 2026, although OpenAI says the final termination date still needs to be confirmed and Cursor may choose to end direct access sooner. This does not mean OpenAI models necessarily disappear from the Cursor editor altogether. OpenAI’s current transition guidance says developers can continue using OpenAI models in Cursor through their own OpenAI API key for local Chat and Agent features, use the Codex IDE extension inside Cursor, or connect through a compatible AI gateway such as Azure, Amazon Bedrock or another OpenAI-compatible provider. The distinction matters for Cursor users: the expected change is to Cursor’s bundled/direct commercial access to OpenAI models, not a universal technical block on running OpenAI tooling in the editor. Cursor’s own acquisition announcement says it plans to use SpaceX compute to expand its own model development, while Reuters independently confirmed the planned cutoff and ongoing discussions between the companies.
