OpenAI is preparing to retire custom GPTs and move reusable workflows toward Plugins. The change affects all ChatGPT plans, although OpenAI currently gives the most detailed timetable for affected Enterprise workspaces.
The current plan targets September 17, 2026 for the migration experience, with availability potentially rolling out unevenly. OpenAI says creation of new custom GPTs is planned to end on September 25 for affected Enterprise workspaces, while existing GPTs are scheduled to stop running on December 11. The dates are explicitly described as planned and remain subject to change.
The migration is not a simple rename. Replacement Plugins can combine reusable instructions with connected apps, but custom actions do not automatically transfer. OpenAI recommends preserving instructions, reference material, integrations and representative test prompts, then testing the replacement before wider rollout. After migration, the original GPT remains usable until retirement but becomes read-only.
For AiToolMap, this is a material ChatGPT product change because it alters the long-term home for custom reusable workflows and the lifecycle of the existing GPT ecosystem. At publication time the detailed timeline is based on OpenAI's first-party documentation; AiToolMap has not yet found independent reporting that adds substantive verification beyond the official migration guidance.
