Agent Runner is Design Arena’s model-agnostic, framework-agnostic Python agent harness. The current repository documents CLI and Python interfaces, file operations, code editing, search, bash execution, automatic context management, persistent sessions and workspace isolation. It supports multiple model-provider families through one interface, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI, Mistral, Moonshot/Kimi and Z.AI. 1
The project can run single tasks, interactive chats and read-only code review. Its tool surface also includes project scaffolding and optional screenshot/media/deployment tooling. These are documented capabilities, not AiToolMap hands-on findings. 1
Pricing & access
Agent Runner itself is free open-source software under the MIT License. The current package requires Python 3.11+ and is distributed on PyPI as agent-runner; PyPI shows version 0.2.0 with Trusted Publishing provenance tied to the Design-Arena/agent-runner repository. 21
Using configured external LLM providers can incur those providers’ own API charges. AiToolMap found no separate paid Agent Runner software tier in the verified current product surfaces. 1
Evidence & trust
The repository explicitly labels Agent Runner beta and in active development. It documents workspace-restricted file operations, command validation, confirmation for dangerous commands and a warning to use dedicated workspaces because the agent can still modify/delete files and execute shell commands. These are useful design disclosures but not an independent security audit. 1
Design Arena’s own technical note describes Agent Runner as a standardized harness for evaluating coding agents and says it records tool interactions and workspace changes for analysis. That supports the intended evaluation use case, but it remains first-party evidence. 3
The canonical 50-source panel found no exact independent review, benchmark or eligible numeric rating corpus for this product; seven source paths were crawler-inaccessible and were treated as no evidence, not negative evidence. No hands-on test was performed.
Who it's for
Agent Runner fits developers and research/engineering teams that need a modifiable Python/CLI harness rather than a closed hosted coding assistant. It is particularly relevant when provider portability, traceability, local workspace control and the ability to inspect the implementation matter. 13
It is less suitable for users who want a mature turnkey desktop product, a large independent user-review base or externally validated safety/reliability guarantees.
Strengths & weaknesses
Strengths
MIT-licensed source; provider-agnostic architecture; CLI and Python APIs; broad file/search/shell tooling; context and session management; documented workspace restrictions; package provenance; explicit beta and security caveats. 12
Weaknesses
early maturity; current 0.2.0 package; small public repository history; no eligible exact-product panel rating input; no independent exact-product benchmark or security assessment found; shell/file capabilities carry material operational risk if pointed at sensitive workspaces. 1
