Doubao is ByteDance's flagship consumer AI assistant in China, but the current product is much broader than a chat interface. Its terms cover web, mobile apps, desktop, browser plugins and SDK/API forms, while the consumer product combines search, writing, translation, coding, file analysis, documents and presentations, image editing and generation, video, voice and increasingly agentic task execution.12
The current general-purpose model generation is Seed2.1. ByteDance released Seed2.1 Pro and Turbo in June 2026 for real-world productivity, multi-step tool use, coding and multimodal work, and explicitly made the family available in Doubao.3 A June 2026 36Kr hands-on test found the free office mode capable of producing research and office deliverables with Seed2.1 Turbo, while a Pro-based long-chain workflow was able to sustain a more complex multi-step task; this is useful current product testing, but it remains one publication's test rather than a universal quality score.4
Doubao's breadth is reinforced by specialized models. Seed Full-Duplex Speech is deployed in the app for more natural simultaneous listening and speaking, with ByteDance reporting material improvements in interruption handling and call satisfaction from large-scale A/B testing.5 Seedance 2.5 is rolling out through Doubao Pro for up to 30-second audio-video generation, multi-round extension, large multimodal reference sets and timestamp-level editing.6 This integrated model stack is one of Doubao's clearest advantages: users can move from research or office work into voice, image and video without assembling separate products.
Task mode makes the assistant more operational. Doubao's current privacy policy says desktop/web task mode can open browser environments, visit sites, click, type, interpret screenshots and reuse login cookies depending on surface and settings; the user can inspect actions, take over for authentication and stop execution.7 ByteDance is also expanding this direction into device-level assistance: Reuters reported Chinese regulatory approval of an AI-focused Nubia-Doubao smartphone model, while Doubao's own phone-assistant site describes the system as an early-stage product capable of operating the phone.8
