Current independent benchmark evidence paints a more nuanced picture than Baidu's launch claims. On LM Arena's August 21 no-style-control Text Arena view, ERNIE 5.1 scored 1468 ±5, placing Baidu eighth among labs and the model 24th in that view.6 On the August 24 Search Arena, however, ERNIE 5.1 scored 1227 ±10 and ranked sixth from 3,788 votes — a materially stronger relative showing and consistent with search being one of the product's core strengths.7
That evidence supports “strong and competitive,” not “current global frontier leader.” Reuters reported on August 18 that Baidu CEO Robin Li had vowed to bring ERNIE back to the AI frontier, noting that the model had gone months without a major upgrade while competitors continued shipping newer generations.8 This does not make ERNIE 5.1 weak; it does mean older claims that it was the top Chinese or top-ten global model should not be frozen into the current review after leaderboards and competitors have moved.
Consumer ratings also vary sharply by region. The current China App Store surface is about 4.2/5 from roughly 19,000 ratings, while the US surface is about 2.6/5 from roughly 162 ratings.29 The US sample is much smaller and many written complaints are older, so the two numbers should not be pooled. Still, the gap reinforces the product's China-first character rather than providing a clean universal satisfaction score.
Baidu's privacy documentation is detailed, but the product is data-intensive. Wenxin records text, voice and image conversation inputs to provide the service and says conversation information is also used to improve the system's understanding and response quality. Depending on features and permissions it may process device identifiers, network information, IP address, installed-app information, Wi-Fi identifiers, location, camera, microphone and files.10 The policy states that personal information is stored within mainland China and is not provided abroad. For ordinary consumer use this is a disclosed product choice; for confidential, regulated or cross-border work it is a material governance constraint.10
