An AI video generation and editing platform for creators, agencies and production workflows.
Runway is a mature generative-media platform centered on AI video creation, editing and production workflows. Its current own-model stack includes Gen-4.5 for video generation and Aleph for video transformation/editing, while the product increasingly acts as an orchestration layer that can expose third-party models alongside Runway models.
Gen-4.5 is the current flagship Runway video model in the reviewed surface. Independent reporting in 2026 describes it as supporting high-definition generation, native audio, longer multi-shot work, character consistency and advanced editing. Runway has also expanded into world models and model routing, signaling that the product is broader than a single text-to-video generator.
Runway’s help center now explicitly recommends local video editors for larger traditional editing projects because its older video editor is no longer actively maintained; development focus is on generative workflows and core AI features. That distinction matters when comparing Runway with conventional NLEs.
A material 2026 expansion is agent access through MCP. Runway now exposes a generation MCP that lets supported agents such as ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Replit generate images and videos directly against a signed-in Runway account. It uses Runway credits, supports Streamable HTTP rather than SSE/stdio, and does not support Explore Mode. Runway Dev also has a separate MCP for coding agents to inspect Developer Portal tasks, model routers and documentation; it is explicitly distinct from the media-generation MCP. 12
Free includes a one-time 125-credit allocation and 5 GB of asset storage. Standard costs $15/month or $144/year per editor and provides 625 monthly credits. Pro costs $35/month or $336/year per editor and provides 2,250 monthly credits. Max costs $95/month or $912/year per editor and provides 9,500 credits per month, access to all Runway and supported third-party models, on-demand generation and one month of credit rollover. Enterprise is custom.
Credit economics are central to value. Gen-4.5 currently costs 12 credits per second, so a five-second generation costs 60 credits and ten seconds costs 120. Standard/Pro credits normally reset monthly without rollover; Max can carry one month of unused credits. Workspace editors are billed separately but share one workspace credit pool rather than receiving a fresh allowance per editor.
The biggest 2026 pricing change is the retirement of Unlimited. Runway introduced Max on June 1, 2026. Unlimited previously combined 2,250 credits with Explore Mode for relaxed-rate unlimited generation. Runway first announced automatic migration to Max at $95/month; an August 27 update extended eligible legacy Unlimited access through November 30, 2026. New heavy users should evaluate Max, not assume older Unlimited economics still apply. 3456
Runway has unusually substantial independent market and technical coverage for an AI-video company. TechCrunch reported a $315M Series E in February 2026 at a $5.3B valuation and has repeatedly covered Gen-4.5, world models and the July 2026 model-router strategy. This validates company maturity and product relevance, not output quality by itself.
Technical leadership is also dynamic rather than permanent. TechCrunch reported that Gen-4.5 topped video leaderboards around launch, but by July 2026 Runway’s text-to-video and image-to-video models no longer led the top rankings while Aleph 2.0 remained among leading video-editing systems according to Artificial Analysis. This is why model-level benchmark results cannot be frozen into a permanent platform rating.
User evidence is sharply contradictory. G2’s current Runway seller surface shows a 4.2/5 average across 121 reviews and identifies the Runway product with 92 reviews. That is a strong positive structured signal, although the displayed 4.2 seller-level average spans two profiles and therefore should not be treated as an exact-product numeric input without the product-page value.
Trustpilot’s exact runwayml.com profile is dramatically more negative: 1.1/5 from 310 reviews, with 194 reviews in the last 12 months and a distribution dominated by one-star ratings. Recent complaints repeatedly mention credit consumption on failed/unusable generations, prompt adherence, subscription changes and customer support. Trustpilot measures consumer/service experience rather than controlled model quality, so it should not be used as a direct proxy for visual-generation benchmark performance; it is nevertheless a material current service-risk signal.
The external evidence is meaningful but role-specific rather than reducible to one clean score. G2 is useful for product/user experience with limits; Trustpilot is useful for service/billing sentiment with limits; technical leaderboards apply to specific models, tasks and dates. 78910
Runway is best for creators, advertising teams, agencies and production groups that expect to iterate across image-to-video, text-to-video, video transformation and multiple model families inside one workspace. The model-router direction is particularly useful for teams that do not want to move projects between separate providers every time leaderboard leadership changes.
It is less attractive for users with very predictable low-budget output needs, because unsuccessful or exploratory generations can consume meaningful credits. Traditional long-form timeline editing should remain in a dedicated local NLE, consistent with Runway’s own current guidance.
