Privacy-focused AI chat from DuckDuckGo providing access to multiple third-party models and follow-up conversations from search.
Duck.ai is DuckDuckGo’s privacy-focused interface for third-party AI models. DuckDuckGo does not provide one proprietary intelligence layer comparable to GPT, Claude or Gemini; its product is the access and privacy proxy. It strips identifying metadata, routes prompts to model providers on the user’s behalf, applies contractual data restrictions and keeps ordinary chat history local unless the user enables encrypted Sync & Backup.123
The current free model picker includes models from Anthropic, Mistral, OpenAI and Tinfoil-hosted open families, while Plus and Pro add stronger Claude and GPT options.4 That makes Duck.ai useful for users who want to compare model families without creating separate provider accounts.
There is no single “Duck.ai answer quality.” Output depends on the selected model, reasoning setting and task.4 DuckDuckGo explicitly says it does not modify the underlying model’s response, although provider moderation policies can still apply.
This is important for evaluation: a Claude or GPT benchmark measures that underlying model, not DuckDuckGo’s privacy proxy, quota system or interface. Duck.ai should therefore be judged mainly on privacy architecture, model availability, usability, limits and surrounding features.
Duck.ai supports image and PDF upload on compatible models, with explicit PDF page limits by tier; spreadsheets remain unsupported.5 It also supports image generation/editing and voice chat or dictation.67
DuckDuckGo routes voice through an encrypted relay and says audio is not retained after the session. It also warns that voice can itself be a biometric identifier even when network identity is hidden.7
These additions make the service more useful than its original text-only incarnation, but it still lacks the integrated work agents, coding environments, enterprise knowledge systems and spreadsheet depth of the largest general-purpose AI workspaces.
DuckDuckGo lets users hide Duck.ai and reduce or disable AI-assisted search.8 Current reporting from TechCrunch and PCWorld shows that this optionality is strategically important to DuckDuckGo users as other search products push AI into default experiences.910
That is a genuine product differentiator: DuckDuckGo can offer AI without making AI mandatory across the rest of the search experience.
Duck.ai has a free tier with daily usage limits. DuckDuckGo does not publish one universal “messages per day” number because prompt cost varies by model.11
In Italy, DuckDuckGo Plus is €9.99/month or €99.99/year and Pro is €19.99/month or €199.99/year, VAT included.12 Plus adds stronger GPT/Claude models and higher Duck.ai limits; Pro adds the highest-end Claude option, higher reasoning effort and twice the Plus usage limits.412
The paid subscription also includes DuckDuckGo’s wider privacy bundle, including VPN and identity/privacy services. This makes a direct comparison with a dedicated AI-only subscription incomplete: value depends on whether the user wants those additional privacy products.
The main pricing weakness is quota predictability. Paid tiers have daily and weekly pools, but exact usable prompt counts vary by model cost.11
DuckDuckGo says requests to model providers are anonymized before transmission: the user’s IP address and other identifying metadata are removed, and requests appear to originate from DuckDuckGo.2
The company also says current providers agree not to train on Duck.ai conversations or share them for third-party commercial use and operate under zero-data-retention arrangements, subject to documented exceptions.2 Those exceptions include short-term prompt caching for some providers, legally required or abuse-related retention, and moderation of uploaded images/files for CSAM.
DuckDuckGo also shares limited non-identifying context such as date, timezone and regional unit preference so answers can be localized.13
Recent Chats are stored locally by default and can be deleted individually or via DuckDuckGo’s Fire Button.13 Users who want cross-device history can enable Sync & Backup, which DuckDuckGo says stores end-to-end encrypted chat data while keeping the master decryption key on the user’s devices.3
Shared-chat links are encrypted and expire after 30 days.14 These features add convenience without silently converting every chat into ordinary provider-readable cloud history.
TechRadar Pro’s 2026 review describes Duck.ai as a simple privacy-first multi-model chatbot and treats privacy plus model choice as its main advantage.15 Tom’s Guide separately tested the anonymous image-editing flow and found it easy to use while emphasizing the privacy-preserving design.16
Windows Central’s older direct test of gpt-oss through Duck.ai also praised speed, free access and the private account-free route, although it predates the current model lineup.17
G2 has an exact DuckDuckGo AI Chat profile, but the current sample is only one verified-current-user review.18 Capterra and the large app-store populations mainly measure the broader DuckDuckGo browser/search product rather than Duck.ai itself.192021
Trustpilot is much more negative but similarly mixes Duck.ai with browser, search, VPN and broader service complaints.22 The result is a clear evidence gap: DuckDuckGo as a consumer product has huge adoption, while Duck.ai itself does not yet have a large independent verified-user corpus.
Duck.ai is particularly compelling for people who want access to leading AI model families without giving each provider a separate user account, IP trail and ordinary chat-training relationship.
Free is enough to test the core proposition. Plus makes sense for users who want stronger Claude/GPT access and also value DuckDuckGo’s wider privacy bundle. Pro is mainly for heavier users who specifically want the highest-end model access and more reasoning capacity.
It is a weaker fit for users whose workflow depends on native enterprise connectors, autonomous long-running agents, advanced spreadsheets, persistent team workspaces or integrated coding environments. In those cases Duck.ai is more naturally a privacy-oriented secondary interface than a full replacement for a work operating system.
Duck.ai’s strongest feature is its privacy proxy: users can reach major third-party model families without exposing a normal provider account/IP identity and without allowing Duck.ai conversations to become provider training data under the documented arrangements.2
The second strength is multi-model access across free and paid tiers.4 The third is low-friction account-free access.1 The fourth is transparent optionality: AI can be hidden instead of forced into every search workflow.8 The fifth is the broader privacy bundle included with paid access.12
Duck.ai has less workspace depth than the leading integrated work assistants. Usage limits are not easily reducible to a simple public prompt count.11 Output quality varies with the selected third-party model.4
Exact-product external evidence is thin, and most large review populations concern the DuckDuckGo browser rather than Duck.ai.1821 Finally, privacy does not mean local inference: prompts still reach cloud model providers through DuckDuckGo’s proxy, and file/image moderation can involve additional services.2
